An Associate Researcher Liu Jing, Attended the international Conference of Food and Water Resources Security in Arid Regions and Made a Keynote Speech

At the invitation of Mr. Mahmoud Solh, the director of  international Center For Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), Liu Jing, an associate researcher in our institute, participated in the international Conference for  policy exploring on food and water resources security in arid regions, co-hosted by 6 establishments, such as, international Center For Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), international Foundation of Agricultural Development(IFAD),  Egyptian Agricultural Research Center, et al. held in Cairo, Egypt, from June 23-28. Hundreds of government officials, experts and development agencies, NGOs and development organizations from 28 countries in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe and the United States and other regions got together to discuss jointly concerning how to develop and implement more effective policies in dry areas to ensure food security, improve water management, and promote employment policy.

Liu Jing, an associate researcher, made a report entitled “Grain Production Adaptability to Climate Change in China”. After a brief analysis of essential characteristic of Chinese grain production and main driving factors of nine-time increase of grain production on a row, from the point of adaptation of climate change in arid areas and raising of grain production capacity, this report sorted out and assessed policies of water resources management, especially irrigation management ones, elaborated that water resources shortage would be the main limiting factor for Chinese grain yield increase annually and pointed out that improvement of utilization efficiency of water resources, perfection of irrigation and strengthening of the adaptation of grain production to climate change are important ways to ensure food security in the future. As a populous country with water resource shortage, under the circumstance of economic development, income raising, the upgrading of consumption structure, China has successfully achieved grain security. the delegates present had showed great concern of and made heated discussion on Chinese experience and lesson on agricultural production.

After the conference, Liu Jing, an associate researcher, received the local television interview and made an in-depth elaboration and analysis on the nine-time increase of grain production on a row and how to address water resources shortage for grain production.
